To say this has been an incredibly unusual summer is an understatement. The enduring heat has given us a extraordinary scenario for our water gardening season. On the one hand ,Jack and I have seen a substantial hatching of dragonflies this year. Hardy waterlilies are producing extensive blooms in spite of the heat. Yet lotus blooms were less and they may already be slowing down.  But, what about the other issues that are occurring in this summer's heat.

Here are a few tips to think about

colorado and papyrsu TIPS FOR THE SUMMER HEAT

Plants

While some plants are thriving in the summer heat others are not. If your plants are coming out of the pond with new growth try putting them in a bigger pot which will add stability and room for your plants to grow.  Plants, like the hardy  marginals that  are having a tough time and are looking tired early in the season might do better by cutting them back and re fertilizing for a fall display.

           Algae blooms

Most of you are dealing with extensive algae blooms. And even though the quick and effective fix of Algae fix  does keep it at bay, extensive  use of it will stress your fish and plants. I tell most everyone who buys it that anything that will slow the growth of algae will also slow the grow of your aquatic plants. We have seen diminished growth on hyacinths and waterlilies with the constant use of Algae fix. And those plants could be working for you at no additional cost to keep your pond clean.

During the height of the season it is best to let more of the bacteria and plant growth provide the competition for nutrients against algae to keep your pond clear.  If you have a koi pond without plants try barley or phosphate removers to keep algae subdued.

           Fish

Another factor of the heat is pond water temperature that exceeds 86 -87 degrees will stress your fish. It is harder for fish to get oxygen from hot water. Do not let your plants cover more than 60% of pond surface because plants will consume oxygen in the evening hours.

If you are adding water to cool down your pond beware of cooling down your water to quickly which can cause stress and create fungus on your fish. Small adjustments more frequently will help keep ponds cooler and fish safer.  Leaves from hyacinth and waterlilies that block sun's heat or a temporary canopy will also provide relief for fish from the sun's heat.

And  now if we could only get a little relief for the rest of us.
